May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition in the United States, affecting 40 million individuals age 18 and older (18.1% of adult Americans) every year.
When two brothers from the United Kingdom offered to share an animated video focusing on this common but potentially disabling group of disorders, I realized we had the perfect topic to kick off May is Mental Health Awareness Month on rtor.org.
Their short video, How to Overcome Any Fear, is an excellent introduction to the subject of anxiety – what it is and how to cope with it. At 4:35 minutes long, it gives a remarkably clear yet informative overview of the potential causes of fear-based anxiety, how our brains respond to it, and a helpful technique for coping with it.
The video focuses on the actual fear a person may experience. It is relevant for anyone who has suffered from phobias, posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), trauma, generalized anxiety, or related disorders.
However, anyone can benefit from a better understanding of how fear and anxiety affect all humans – especially at this time of the coronavirus pandemic, with all the worry, grief, and disruption it has caused.

How to Overcome Any Fear
Do our fears and anxieties serve a purpose? Are they rooted in our genetics? Or learned from our experiences? Whatever their origin, you can choose to overcome them using Exposure and Response Prevention techniques.
We’re Matthew and Laurence – identical twins from London. We grew up with our father, who had Narcissistic Personality Disorder. We were emotionally abused and neglected; as a result, we developed Complex-PTSD and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Utilizing Exposure and Response Prevention techniques has been pivotal; it is how we have taken back control of our lives.
We created a video on this topic – a video we wish we had when we first started trying to overcome our fears and anxieties. We hope that this video can serve as a guiding light for others who are still crippled by their fear and anxieties.
